This Hybrid summit will bring together diverse, multidisciplinary stakeholders (clinicians, nurses, birth workers, policy experts, public health leaders, philanthropists, and community advocates) to collectively move from awareness of racial inequities in perinatal outcomes to action and accountability for Black birthing families in California.

Supporting Families of Color in the NICU: Lactation and More - february 19, 2021 9am - 12noon pst

REGISTER HERE  Please join us on February 19, 2021 from 9 AM to 12 PM PT for Supporting Families of Color In The NICU: Lactation and More a half day live webinar featuring Ebony Harvey, BSN, RN, CCRN, CLES, Certified Doula and Jessica Wade, CLES, Certified Doula. This webinar will focus on what families of color go through when they have their child in the NICU and how to best support them in their lactation journey.  REGISTER HERE! Objectives 

  • Prepare to provide culturally compliant support to families (parents and baby) who have recently exited the NICU
  • Outline the basic structure of the NICU by learning about the several components that comprise it.
  • Identify 3 different strategies to improve breastfeeding rates in the NICU for people of color   
  • Differentiate between the distinguishing factors of providing support for a non-NICU family and NICU family
  • Recognize implicit biases that influence the manner that information and care is delivered to different communities
  • Discuss the importance of taking substantial time to educate patients on the benefits of donated breast milk for NICU babies and list 2 key pieces of information that parents should be informed of 
  • Correlate how extreme stress caused by the NICU can cause lactating parents difficulties with milk letdown, negatively impacting their milk supply.
  • Discuss how providing emotional support to lactating parents throughout their NICU journey can positively impact lactation.
  • Identify the key roles that other hospital staff, such as social workers, have on a parent’s NICU journey and importance of fostering interdepartmental collaboration 
  • Outline an improved delivery process for donor milk consent forms, including properly educating parents about donor milk. 
  • Describe how the current delivery method used for consent forms in the NICU impacts lactation rates, especially in non-English speaking communities of color.
  • Recognize patterns within systems that perpetuate behaviors that overall negatively impact lactation rates in communities of color
  • Empower parents of color to recognize their power as the decision makers by encouraging them to ask all the necessary information to make a decision about their child
